Types of Button Batteries / Coin Cells
🔹 Primary (Non-rechargeable)
- CR Lithium Manganese Dioxide (Li-MnO₂, 3.0V)|Most widely used
Models: CR2032, CR2025, CR2016, CR2450, CR2430, CR1632, CR2477
✅ Advantages: Low self-discharge, long shelf life (8–10 years), wide operating temperature range, high energy density
📌 Applications: Computer CMOS, car remote keys, smart wearables, sensors, thermometers, security devices
- BR Lithium Carbon Monofluoride (Li-CFₓ, 3.0V)
Models: BR2032, BR2025
✅ Advantages: Ultra-low self-discharge, extremely long storage life, high temperature resistance; low current output
📌 Applications: Industrial meters, water/gas meters, long-term backup power, high-end IoT
- SR Silver Oxide (Ag₂O, 1.55V)|Watch batteries
Models: SR626SW (AG4), SR44SW (AG13), SR621SW
✅ Advantages: Extremely stable discharge voltage, higher capacity than LR type, good leakage resistance
📌 Applications: Quartz watches, precision photometric instruments
- LR Alkaline Manganese (Alkaline, 1.5V)|AG series
Models: LR44=AG13, LR41=AG3, LR626=AG4
✅ Advantages: Low cost, abundant supply
❌ Disadvantages: Unstable voltage, prone to leakage after long storage
📌 Applications: Toys, small calculators, simple electronic gifts
- PR Zinc-Air (Zn-Air, 1.4V)|Hearing aid batteries
Models: PR44, PR48, PR70
✅ Advantages: Very high energy density; activated once the seal tab is removed and exposed to air
❌ Disadvantages: Short service life after activation, sensitive to humidity
📌 Applications: Hearing aids
- Carbon Zinc Manganese (1.5V)
Old low-cost type, low capacity and easy leakage; rarely used nowadays
🔹 Rechargeable Button Cells
- LIR Lithium-Ion (3.6/3.7V)
Models: LIR2032, LIR2450
📌 Applications: Rechargeable, alternative to CR for real-time clock and small modules
- ML / VL Rechargeable Lithium Manganese (3.0V)
Models: ML2032, VL2020
✅ Features: Suitable for microampere trickle charge, ideal for RTC backup on mainboards
- Ni-MH Nickel-Metal Hydride Button Cells (1.2V), Ni-Cd Nickel Cadmium (obsolete)
Mostly used in assembled button battery packs
✅ Naming Rule
Prefix = Chemistry system; first two digits = diameter (mm); last two digits = thickness × 0.1 mm
Example: CR2032 → Lithium manganese, Φ20 mm, thickness 3.2 mm
⚠️ Important Note
Batteries with different voltages cannot be interchanged directly!
CR=3V, SR=1.55V, LR=1.5V, PR=1.4V, LIR=3.7V. Do not substitute even if they share the same outline size.
